Shinigami and Hollows. Two races that have been warring since the dawn of time. They are polar opposites, incarnations of equal powers, yin and yang, ever fighting, squabbling, and battling with each other. One fights to protect their people and to purify the souls of the enemy, the other fights to eat and survive. Every generation they think up plots and ploys, strategies and schemes, designs and devices, all aimed to defeat the other side. A full assault on Hueco Mundo was a common one, or sometimes an attack on the human world. But the new maneuver employed by the Hollows was different from the rest.
It had been a lull in the fighting in which the Captains and Arrancar were not seen in battle. The Espada were rebuilding and preparing while the Seiretei were enjoying peace for the time being, as well as building defenses in case of an attack. The battles in the living world were small skirmishes at best between unranked Shinigami and weak Hollows. As the years passed, the Seiretei began to question if there was another assault coming, and slowly they started to relax the defenses they had built. One by one the Shinigami opened doors for the Arrancar, creating small holes in their fortifications. They expected a full assault, so they had no way to guard against the small task force of Espada that infiltrated the Soul Society.
The Hollows snuck through the Seiretei, concealing their spiritual presence. The small patrols of inexperienced Shinigami had no chance of spotting the elite Arrancar, and so the stealth team went unnoticed until they reached the Shinigami Research and Development Institute, where the Twelfth Squad Captain detected the Reiatsu of an Espada. But by then it was too late, the team had already stolen what they needed from the Shinigami and called in a Negación to escape the Seiretei.
The object stolen from the Seiretei was actually a large chunk of research and technology, the only thing that would help the Shinigami in their overall scheme. The Kaikyō Kotei originally was used to contain the current of time and allow Shinigami to pass safely through the Dangai Precipice World, this was among a few objects stolen by the Arrancar. The Arrancar developed a method of sealing off the Dangai Precipice World completely, stranding the Shinigami.. But doing this required a massive Reiatsu feeding the Kaikyō Kotei, and so it is rumored that a being of untold power sits in the center of the Dangai, flowing power to keep the currents swollen.
With the Dangai Precipice World closed, all forms of movement to and from the Soul Society are cut off from the Shinigami. They are trapped inside the Seiretei, as well as unable to communicate with the agents stranded in the living world. Meanwhile, the Humans are being assaulted non-stop by hungry hollows, without any spiritual protection besides those with the power in Gensei. Eventually, the Humans would call together a counsel of the spiritually aware. Together they developed a way of cutting Gensei off from the Spiritual Worlds completely, including both the Soul Society and Hueco Mundo.
The Espada have not informed their allies in Hueco Mundo of their plan, and they did not foresee this turn of events. So, they fed the Hollows lies, which wasn't difficult considering the base intelligence of most of the Hollows under their control. They directed the Hollows toward Soul Society's Rukongai in order to feed, thanks to their lack of access to living souls. The Soul Society, now cut off from their charges, and forced to defend more than just their own Seireitei, have formed a task force charged with protecting Rukongai much like they protected humans. However, because there were so few hollows coming in at a time, it ended up becoming a two man job per district, leaving the majority of the Shinigami without any duties at all.
